The solar panel needs to face south in the northern hemisphere (any where north of the equator) and opposite of that south of the equator. It will make a big difference, as to how much you panel will charge your battery. Also in indirect sun the amount of power it produces will be less and also less on cloudy days. The amount of sun and at the angle at which the sun hits it, will make a difference too.
