From the inside face of the post to the inside face of the frame of the gate would be 3 1/2 inches. However this is adjustable because the J bolt is threaded and can be adjusted horizontally. Also this assuming our gate is being used, which has a 2" frame. If the frame is bigger the gap will be smaller.
